Blue, bluer, blueberries-my love!

Yes I love blueberries, which are also called bilberries, they belong to the heather family and are staples in my fridge

“Everything´s all right, as long as there are Blueberries in my fridge”

That is actually the case, I must always have blueberries in my fridge. They must never run out and if they ever do (which has never happened!), I still have some in the freezer, just in case!

They are so delicious, so crisp and yet fruity and they go with so many dishes. There are endless recipes with blueberries: raw food blueberry pancakes, crepes, pancakes, blueberry cake and muffins, blueberry nice cream, blueberry jam, chia pudding with blueberries and so on and so forth. Blueberries always and everywhere!

But what makes the little blue balls so valuable, apart from their delicious taste?

I would like to answer this question for you in this post.

First of all the nutritional values per 100g:

  • Energy: 176.0 kj/ 42.0 kcal
  • Protein: 0.6g
  • Carbohydrates: 7.4g (of which sugar 7.3g)
  • Fat: 0.6g
  • Fiber: 4.9g

Blueberries contain many good carbohydrates and fiber. The fruit sugar is released slowly into the blood by the included fiber, which ensures a long-lasting feeling of fullness. The low fat and protein content makes them the perfect food for a vegan high carb low fat diet.

In addition to the many good fiber, blueberries also contain a lot of vitamins. Such as vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, C and E. Vitamin A and E belong to the fat-soluble vitamins, which means that fat is required so that the body can utilize these vitamins. Since blueberries already contain some fat anyway, it is not necessary to consume additional fat/oil with the food to utilize the vitamins.

Furthermore, blueberries are rich in minerals. If you eat blueberries regularly, you are perfectly supplied with the following minerals:

Chloride, iron, potassium, calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and zinc.

Blueberries are true superfoods, real vitamin bombs and besides all the above-mentioned vitamins and minerals, they also contain so-called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins have an anti-inflammatory effect and support the body in catching free radicals and neutralizing them, they also give the berries their deep blue color. They counteract the aging process of the skin, thus prevent the formation of wrinkles and even prevent cancer and atherosclerosis through the contained bioactive substances.

The included vitamin C stimulates the formation of collagen, which supports and pads the skin from within, vitamin E is called the beauty vitamin. Both vitamins belong to the antioxidants, which in turn strengthen the immune system. Tannins are another advantage of the little berries, they work against diarrhea, inhibit the multiplication of bacteria and accelerate the healing of mucosal inflammation. Thus they are a good companion for digestive problems, which should definitely be on the menu regularly.

Have fun snacking on berries! Feel free to write to me how you like to use the lovely little blue berries the most…

Berry greetings!
