View allMyths about raw food—unfortunately, there are quite a few. To avoid confusion and truly understand what is healthy and beneficial for yourself and your body, you need to examine all...
Raw food is booming – and with it, a multitude of promises and myths. Many people experience noticeable health benefits from eating more fresh, unprocessed foods. Unfortunately, however, there are also claims circulating in the community that do not hold up under closer scrutiny. In this article, we debunk seven of the most common raw food myths – with solid evidence, in an easy-to-understand way, and with a touch of common sense.
Feast on the treasures of nature!
🔍 Myth 1: “Raw foodists only need 3–5 hours of sleep”
As nice as it sounds – the human body still needs an average of 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, even on a raw food diet. Although sleep quality can improve with a raw diet that requires less digestive effort, many important processes, such as hormone regulation, cell repair, brain function, and stress management, occur exclusively during sleep. This essential period cannot simply be “optimized away.”
🦷 Myth 2: “Brushing your teeth is unnecessary on a raw food diet”
Even if raw food seems more natural: dental hygiene remains mandatory! Fruit and vegetables contain sugar, acids, and all three macronutrients – carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Like any other diet, these can get stuck in the spaces between your teeth. Only regular brushing protects your teeth – regardless of your diet.
💧 Myth 3: “If you eat raw food, you don’t need to drink water”
It is true: fruit and vegetables provide highly structured, bioavailable water. But our bodies lose fluid every day through breathing, sweating, and digestion – this loss must be replenished. In addition, the body needs about 7g of water to optimally utilize 1g of sugar (e.g. from fruit). While a raw food diet rich in water reduces the need to drink – it does not eliminate it entirely!
Raw food is exciting, inspiring, beautiful, and mysterious.
🧬 Myth 4: “Raw food cures every disease”
Raw food can make a valuable contribution to your health – but it is not a cure-all. Depending on the cause, acute or chronic conditions may require medical treatment. Health is an interplay of diet, exercise, stress management, sleep, and emotional balance. Diet is an important part of the wheel, but only one.
🫙 Myth 5: “Oil liver flushes remove gallstones”
What is excreted during these “liver flushes” is usually clumped oil soap – not real gallstones. The greenish clumps are caused by a chemical reaction between oil and bile acids in the intestine, and acid from the citrus juices usually used. It is a clever marketing strategy to sell liver flushes, but it offers no guarantee of real detoxification or “stone dissolution.”
🍌 Myth 6: “The more fruit you eat, the more weight you lose”
Fruit is healthy – no question about that. But it also contains calories, of course. If you want to lose weight, you need a negative calorie balance. Although fruit fills you up quickly thanks to fiber and water, too much is too much – no matter what it is. If you eat too much fruit, you can also gain weight. The right amount for your body makes the difference.
🌞 Myth 7: “Raw foodists don’t get sunburned”
A widespread misconception. UV radiation affects our skin regardless of what we eat. Although antioxidants from fresh fruit and vegetables can have a certain cell-protecting effect, they are no substitute for shade or sunscreen. A mindful approach to the sun remains necessary even with a perfect diet.
